  15. <p>     DIED. Fred MacMurray, 83, television's quintessential father
  16. figure; in Santa Monica, Calif. Adept at comedy and drama,
  17. MacMurray had a stage, film and TV career that spanned five
  18. decades. Although he usually played the proverbial good guy in
  19. his more than 80 films, MacMurray's most memorable roles went
  20. against type: a crooked insurance agent in Double Indemnity
  21. (1944), a cowardly, ambitious Navy lieutenant in The Caine
  22. Mutiny (1954) and a philandering husband in The Apartment
  23. (1960). But his affable image served MacMurray well in several
  24. Disney movies and in the role of the widower-father Steve
  25. Douglas in TV's My Three Sons.
